Singer / songwriter Patrick Bloom is blijkbaar niet met slaande deuren vertrokken bij  the Mayflies want de brave man tekent met liefst vijf songs aanwezig op hun nieuwste album en heeft er waarschijnlijk ook voor gezorgd dat de roots - jam - americana band uit Iowa op de loonlijst van Mud Dauber Records is terecht gekomen. David Lumberg / bass, vocals, James Robinson / drums & vocals en Stacy Webster / vocals, guitars zullen hem wellicht eeuwig dankbaar zijn en hebben met "A Thousand Small Things" alvast meer dan hun best gedaan om al die vrijgevigheid behoorlijk te honoreren.

The Mayflies staan nog steeds synoniem voor they're the rock end of roots and the country end of rock of met andere woorden : they're hard to describe but impossible to forget. De openingstrack "Mares" is een prima voorbeeld van the Mayflies traditie : I could swear I've heard that song somewhere before en dat zou dan in dit geval wel eens JJ Cale's "Don't Cry Sister Cry" kunnen zijn maar ook ondermeer Robert Palmer zal welicht verbaasd  toehoren en zien  hoe "All These Desperate Angels" hem nu in heaven or hell gezelschap houden ...

"Petaluma" , "In My Time of Dying", "Shit Creek" en  "Spooky" - with Jon Eric on banjo - dragen een chaotic, psychedelic stempeltje waarvan ondermeer Django Reinhardt, Jerry Garcia en Willy De Ville ook min of meer gezegende patentdragers zijn.  The Mayflies jump and race in the skittery picking of traditional bluegrass with "Maybe Maybelline"  en "Mississippi Soul" and slow, sway with " Caroline" ..... met andere woorden ; They never stand still !  (SWA)
